The Story and Instructional Design Philosophy of Massage Mastery Online
In 2019, as a textbook author I had a problem. My publisher, Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins discontinued their massage therapy line and my books were suddenly without a home and printed copies were difficult to find. Schools who had adopted Massage Mastery and Spa Bodywork for their programs started to email when Amazon and Barns & Noble jacked up the price ($89-$120 per copy) of the few printed books still on the market.
My husband and partner, Eric Brown, has long been a leader in online learning in the massage profession. He moved the textbooks into an online format to give schools immediate access to this content. The Massage Mastery Online learning platform allows me to organize information into bite-sized chunks, perfect for on-the-go learners who might want to finish a section of reading while they wait for a friend at a restaurant or take a bus to school. When learners mark sections complete the system tracks their effort with a progress bar showing them where they are in a chapter. Schools can monitor learner progress on reading assignments with an administrator login.
Digital Textbooks Are Better!
Over the last 20 years as an educator I’ve indulged a passion for instructional design, first as a massage instructor, then as the director of education for a massage school, then as the director of education for Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP) and now, with Eric as the two-person team behind Sweet Orange Education and Massage Mastery Online.
What I have come to ardently believe is that digital textbooks are a better learning tool than printed textbooks for 21st century massage students. Digital materials are better for the planet, better for the pocketbook, and better for mobile learning. No modern student wants to lug around a big, heavy textbook and we know this because students often fail to bring textbooks to class. If their textbooks are on their phones, tablets, and laptops, they are never far away.
The learning platform we (or rather Eric) developed for Massage Mastery Online is inspiring my zealous instructional design geek, and Eric continues to add new features and investigate the latest technology.
I’ve long dreamed of ways to make reading assignments a better learning tool and online technology makes this easier. As we release new products you’ll see a strong focus on massage terminology, more content interactivity, more learning application games, more video, and topic-specific quizzing. These features make learning more fun and help learners better comprehend and memorize important material.
Check out our free digital textbook titled Preventing Disease Transmission in a Massage Practice. It was written in response to the COVID-19 pandemic but demonstrates some of the instructional design features we’re using now. Keep your eyes out for new content coming soon.
Those educators that have worked with me in the past know that I am dedicated to students, instructors, and schools. I can’t wait to support you better through the development of rich, engaging material and resources that will help you bring this content alive in the classroom.
Warmly,
Anne Williams, Director of Education
