Client Assessment in Massage Education
An Online Group Discussion with Special Guest, Whitney Lowe
Client Assessment in Massage Education
A Collaborative Exploration with Session Participants and Special Guest, Whitney Lowe
In 2013, the Entry Level Analysis Project (ELAP) set a benchmark in massage therapy education with a comprehensive blueprint, outlining key learning objectives and outcomes across 625 hours of core curriculum. Within this framework, 44 crucial hours were allocated to client assessment and session documentation—a testament to its importance in shaping competent practitioners.
Fast forward to 2016, when the Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies underscored this sentiment with a qualitative study, “Process for Massage Therapy Practice and Essential Assessment.” Here, 31 experts in the field echoed the significance of thorough assessment processes in massage therapy. Despite this, the proportion of time dedicated to assessment in training programs appears to be shrinking and some voices in online discussions suggest that most massage therapists don’t need assessment skills.
What do you think? When it comes to client assessment, what should schools teach? What knowledge and skills should graduates demonstrate and what resources are needed?
To address these questions and more, we invite you to participate in an interactive and collaborative live Zoom event. Here’s what to expect:
- Introduction: We’ll frame our discussion by examining the results of the “Client Assessment in Massage Therapy Education Survey.”
- Small Group Breakouts: Engage in discussions with peers to delve into the nuances of client assessment in massage therapy training.
- Group Sharing Session: Reconvene with the larger group to exchange insights and present innovative ideas.
- Special Guest Appearance: We’re thrilled to welcome WHITNEY LOWE, a luminary in clinical assessment, who will enrich our dialogue and help us navigate the evolution of massage therapy curricula.
Your voice is vital to shaping the future of massage therapy. Participate in the ASSESSMENT SURVEY and reserve your spot to be part of the conversation.
